Joint Statement: Government Response to Bondi Junction Coronial Inquest Will Not Prevent Next Tragedy

On 6 August, Mental Health Carers NSW joined five other leading mental health organisations, BEING, the Mental Health Coordinating Council, Wayahead, RANZCP NSW, and the Australian Society of Psychiatrists, in a joint statement responding to the NSW Government’s handling of the Bondi Junction Coronial Inquest recommendations.

While the Government’s initial announcement suggested strong support for all 13 recommendations, the joint statement highlights a gap between what was promised and what has actually been funded. NSW Government data shows over 58,000 people with severe and complex mental health needs currently can’t access the care they require, with a further 166,000 unable to access basic psychosocial supports like housing and employment assistance.

As a signatory to this statement, MHCN continues to advocate alongside our sector partners for the NSW Government to move beyond in-principle support and commit real funding and transparency (including public release of the gap analysis and proper investment in supported housing) to prevent future tragedies and better support people living with severe mental illness and the families and carers who support them.
