Event overview

This one-day hybrid symposium, convened by the Australian Society of Psychiatrists (ASoP), confronts the difficult questions raised by the Bondi Junction Inquest — and asks what must change.

Serious harm rarely arises from a single failure but from the cumulative effects of fragmented care, missed warning signs, constrained services and unclear accountability. This symposium brings together psychiatrists, legal experts, policymakers and people with lived experience for three focused panel discussions to explore the key clinical, legal and system level lessons from the Inquest.

Held with deep respect for those affected, this is a forward-looking, evidence-informed conversation about ethical decision-making and the reforms required if prevention is to take precedence over reaction.

The symposium will be delivered in hybrid format, with limited in-person attendance at the iconic Museum of Sydney and livestream virtual access for national participation.

Speakers include those personally impacted by the tragedy (Elizabeth Young), legal/policy experts (Sue Chrysanthou, Natasha Robinson, Hugh Dillon, Steve Robson, Amanda Cohn), lived experience/carer advocates (MHCN CEO Jonathan Harms, Richard Hendrie), and psychiatrists (Andy Carroll, Kimberlie Dean, Anthony Harris, Jacqueline Huber, Steve Kisely, Beth Kotze, Olav Nielssen, Chris Ryan).

We want this symposium to be as accessible as possible. If you are experiencing financial difficulty and would like to attend, please email contact@asop.au.
