MHCN and BEING have written a joint letter to the Minister for Police NSW following several occasions where there has been unacceptable police treatment involving people living with mental health challenges.

The NSW Police plays a vital role in protecting the citizens of NSW. However, the inability of the police to safely discharge this role with people experiencing mental health crises has severely eroded trust in NSW Police responding to people with mental health challenges.

5 years prior to July 2025, there have been 52 people experiencing a mental health crisis that have been killed by police. MHCN strongly calls for a public apology to the victims and loved ones of those who have been killed, as well as a truth telling roundtable, community consultation, annual public reporting of those killed, mandating proper police training, and providing clear information about the NSW Police Mental Health Division.

📣 MHCN is excited to launch a new resource, ‘Caring for a person with mental health challenges in a correctional facility or forensic hospital.`

The resource was co-designed by MHCN’s Carers of Forensic and Corrections Patients Network and aims to support carers and family members who have a loved one in a correctional facility or forensic hospital. The resource is in the format of a webpage on MHCN’s website.

The resource was designed around common questions that carers had when their loved one went into a facility and used helpful information from their own journeys to contribute to the resource. The webpage hopes to serve as a lived experience informed resource and a practical guide for carers to help them navigate the justice and forensic mental health system.

The webpage is grouped into 6 sections, with a range of questions and answers:
▪️ Who is a forensic patient and who is a correctional patient?
▪️ Locating and visiting a person in custody or the forensic hospital
▪️ Caring for your person
▪️ The Court System
▪️ The Mental Health Review Tribunal
▪️ Helpful links
