Last month, the NSW Government announced a modest investment in mental health in the 2025-26 State Budget. This investment will meet neither current or future demands on the mental health service system nor address the reasonable expectations from the people of NSW.

As a member of the NSW Mental Health Alliance, MHCN calls for urgent and ongoing investment to address three critical priorities:
▪️ Planning: Build a connected system through better planning, monitoring, and integration across mental health, primary care, and community services.
▪️ Workforce: Tackle the chronic shortage of mental health professionals by investing in recruitment, retention, and support, including the community-managed sector.
▪️ Community-based care: Fund early intervention and long-term access to mental health and psychosocial supports that keep people experiencing ongoing mental health challenges well and out of hospital.

The 2025-26 State Budget fails to deliver the scale of reform needed to fix a fragmented system in crisis. NSW needs investments in community-managed mental health services and psychosocial support programs that can reduce the strain on acute inpatient services.

Investments in the whole mental health workforce are also required. With this budget, the NSW Government has missed one opportunity to involve the community sector in the development of key services and supports. It cannot miss the even narrower opportunity open to it during the next financial year.

The NSW Mental Health Alliance urges the NSW Government to act decisively. We call upon the Government to partner with us to design and deliver the comprehensive, holistic and accessible mental health system that the people of NSW deserve.
