📣 MHCN stands with @beingmentalhealthconsumers in calling for urgent action on alternatives to police-led responses to mental health crises.

A recent ABC News story has once again highlighted the traumatising and disproportionate use of force by police during a welfare check. The confronting bodycam footage shows a person in distress being pepper sprayed, despite posing no physical threat.

We echo BEING’s call to the NSW Government: enough is enough. For over two years, alternatives have been under discussion, now is the time for action.

We urge all concerned NSW residents to share your story about police responding to mental health challenges with your local Member of Parliament.

Some things you can include in writing to your Member of Parliament:
▪️ Call on the Government to publicly share what alternatives are being discussed
▪️ Urgently invite relevant advocacy groups like BEING and MHCN into their conversation
▪️ Demand increased funding for Safe Havens so that people in crisis have somewhere to receive appropriate support when experiencing a mental health crisis

It’s time to move beyond a law enforcement-first response to mental health.
