On Wednesday 27 May, MHCN CEO Jonathan Harms was a panellist for the Carer Knowledge Exchange Online Symposium 2026: Recognising, Respecting, Reimagining: 50 years of learning from carers and shaping what comes next. The Symposium provided the opportunity for many people and organisations from across the sector to come together to reflect on 50 years of learning from carers, share knowledge and experiences, and explore current and future directions for research, policy and practice. The event created valuable opportunities to connect across sectors, learn from each other, and continue important conversations about improving outcomes for carers and the people they support. 📣 MHCN, Transcultural Mental Health Centre and the University of New South Wales are conducting a study on mental health services and family-focused practice with young people (aged 18 - 25) from Arabic, Mandarin and Vietnamese speaking communities and their families/carers. We're inviting: Young people aged 18–25 from Arabic, Mandarin or Vietnamese speaking communities with lived experience of mental health services, and their families/carers (18+) What's involved? One or two 1.5-hour focus groups via Zoom or in person. An interpreter and bilingual health professional will be present throughout. 📣 The @abcnews_au Four Corners episode aired on 1 June exposed unacceptable police violence against mental health consumers. In response, @beingmentalhealthconsumers called on the NSW Government to end the over-criminalisation of mental health distress, fund alternatives to police responses, and improve training for police and ambulance. The Australian Society of Psychiatrists @asop.au acknowledged that police are often called upon to fill gaps in the mental health system but stressed that law enforcement should not be the default response to a health emergency. ASoP called on the NSW Government to implement the NSW Upper House Inquiry's recommendation to develop a health-led response to mental health emergencies, informed by successful interstate models. On behalf of families and carers of people with mental ill health, MHCN strongly backs these calls. When carers of people with mental health issues want to get help for someone having a mental health crisis, they should have confidence in a planned, ethical, professionally delivered response that can competently de-escalate risks for all concerned. 🔗 Click the link in our bio to read MHCN's full statement
