Caring for a person with a mental health condition can involve a broad network of people including relatives, friends and medical professionals like psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and social and peer workers. Inclusive care planning refers to how everyone involved in a person’s care network can work together inclusively and collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcome for their loved one. Having knowledge of a system’s standards and your rights, as well as effective communication skills can prove pivotal, enabling care and treatment to be given effectively.

A person’s mental health journey is never linear and the concept of recovery, or achieving the optimal state of personal, social and emotional wellbeing, whilst living with or recovering from a mental health condition, will vary for everyone. When caring for a loved one, friend or person with mental health issues it is important to treat them with dignity and respect regardless of their emotional experiences and to remain optimistic by looking at their journey and supporting them through the lens of recovery, empowering them to take control of their own life.
